Drains
The plumbing system in your home has two separate but equally important subsystems. The first subsystem brings fresh water into your house, while the second is the drainage system which disposes of wastewater. Known as the DWV system your drainage system includes drains, waste, and vents.
Drain lines gather water from several fixtures; waste lines take toilet wastes, while vent pipes, protruding out of the roof, enable harmful sewer gases to evaporate, which also relieves the pressure from the drain pipes and enables waste to flow properly. Drain and waste lines are tilted downwards and their contents are pulled down by gravity. The contents of these lines are eventually delivered to a main sewer line, which in turn takes the waste to a septic tank or to a sewage facility.
Vents are not the only way by which dangerous gases are released from your home. A similar function is performed by an additional device known as trap. The trap is a curved section of the drainpipe that is found next to each fixture. If you use a fixture, some of the water coming from it flows through the trap into the drainpipe, while a sufficient amount of water stays within the trap thus forming a seal. This seal thwarts sewer gases and objectionable odors from leaking into your home.
Cast iron, plastic and copper compose most drainpipes. Drainpipes are larger than water pipes - between 4 and 10cm – thus helping reduce the possibility of clogs and blockages within the drain lines. The drainpipe of a toilet is generally 10 cm across, while shower, sink, and bathtub drains are about 4-5 cm in diameter.
Still, drain blockages do occur. A clog can be cleared by accessing the traps through their clean-out valves, and removing common obstructions such as grease and hair. Your expert Las Vegas Plumber can clean the waste lines through the clean-out valves.
If simply cleaning the clean-out valves doesn't solve the problem, ask your plumber to use his drain cleaning equipment to unclog the waste lines. The plumbers' equipment should consist of plungers, sewer tapes, and various types of augers, such as toilet augers and plumber's snakes. To make sure that your drains are unlikely to clog, you need preventive maintenance; your Las Vegas plumber will clean your drains regularly and save you the pain of an emergency house call.
