Water Heating & Cooling Systems
Don't you just hate it when you are longing for a warm shower, but the hot water has run out? Have you ever turned on your kitchen tap to get a cold drink, only to be unexpectedly scalded by hot water?
Your domestic water system is made up of hot and cold water. Supply lines carry the water to the fixtures and appliances that use it. But what makes the system work? How can cold and hot water be kept separate?
Water entering from the main supply lines is ready for your cold water needs. Water from the municipal system is delivered to your house through a high-pressure pipe. It is then carried through water lines to your home's various outlets, such as fixtures and appliances. Toilets, for example, utilize a large quantity of cold water. The water supply system may have water softeners and filters installed, to purify water meant for cooking or drinking. Install water filters beneath your sinks to ensure your drinking water system is free of contaminants.
Cold water is turned to hot by an appliance known as a water heater. You water heater can run on electricity or gas and houses an inner steel tank with a 40-60 gallon water capacity. The cold water is delivered to the heater through a pipe. Once inside, the heating elements work to increasingly warm the water. Hot water from the heater is supplied to connected fixtures and appliances through an outlet of several pipes. Draining or clearing sediment from the heater is accomplished by using a drain valve located at the heater's base. As a preventive measure, it is recommended that you drain the tank once or twice a year to reduce any sediment build up.
